A youth pastor of a church with 500 members led by his parents was shot to death while he was in a car in Pomona, California, early Monday.
Daniel Diaz, 33-year-old, was with a friend and three young people in a car near Park Avenue and Mayfair Street after a birthday celebration.
According to the investigators, Diaz was sitting in the front passenger seat when the suspect approached the car and shot him four times. The suspect fled the scene after the shooting.
The young pastor was rushed to the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical, where he was pronounced dead.
The motive for the shooting remains unknown.
“I’m still waiting for him to call, tell me ‘good morning’ and ‘I love you,’” said Denise Lugo, Diaz’s girlfriend, according to KTLA.
Young members of the New Beginning Church in Baldwin Park, who were mentored by Diaz, were distraught.
“He was like a big brother to me,” friend Raymond Yiniquez said through tears, KTLA reported. “He was always there for me every time I needed him. I’m just really going to miss him.”
The Church said on it's facebook page:
Daniel our Youth Pastor, your smile will be engraved in our hearts forever, R.I.P. brother you are now in the greatest Glory with our Lord and Savior Jesus."
A vigil was held in Pomona Tuesday night to mourn the loss of the beloved youth minister.
